Master Programme "Master of European and European Legal Studies"The two-semester postgraduate programme “Master of European and European Legal Studies” is offered by the Institute for European Integration at the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg in co-operation with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg. Its successful completion leads to the award of either the academic degree “Master of European Studies (M.E.S.)” or “Master of Laws/European Legal Studies (LL.M. European Legal Studies)”. The Master Programme in its current form is built on a series of similar previous postgraduate study programmes, which have also been held at the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg since 1994. The Europa-Kolleg Hamburg is an internationally recognised institution for education and research in the field of European integration. The fundamentally improved version has successfully been completed by students from all over the globe for the first time in the aca-demic year 2008/2009. The revision of the Master Programme has taken into account the requirements of the Bologna-Process; therefore, the programme follows a modular structure. Within the course of the academic year 2009/2010 the accreditation process is expected to be finalised. The Master Programme follows the “College Model”. The Master Students have the opportu-nity to both “live and study under one roof”. Lectures are held at the Europa-Kolleg’s lecture halls, and the students may find accommodation at the Europa-Kolleg’s apartment house. In the past, most students from more than forty countries favoured this choosing to live at the Europa-Kolleg as well. The Europa-Kolleg is located in a charming and quiet neighbourhood in the western part of Hamburg close to the city centre, the so called “Elbe-Suburbs”. This College Model indisputably enhances the communication among the students and the integration of students into the group of participants. Besides, living at the Europa-Kolleg entails a number of other advantages as well, such as having the opportunity to visit at your own convenience the extensive library with about 25,000 publications relevant for research in the field of European integration which is housed at the Europa-Kolleg. It is worthy of note that the studies at the Master Programme are guided by an inter-disciplinary approach; lectures combine aspects of law, economics and political science. Yet another special feature of the Master Programme is to be seen in the unique curricular design of the programme. At the beginning of the programme students are instructed on the general foundations of European integration. After common ground has been laid, equalising all students’ knowledge on the EU, the specialisation modules follow. Students have the op-portunity to study one of the following four special fields in greater depth: “The EU as a Politi-cal Actor”; “External Relations of the EU”, “Companies as Economic Actors” and “Law of the EU”, depending on the offered programme of the respective academic year. The time schedule of the Master Programme allows for four phases: lectures on the founda-tions of European integration (ten weeks), specialisation in of the four aforementioned fields (16 weeks), practical training at European or national institution or enterprises (four to six weeks) and preparing a master thesis (four months). The Master Programme is primarily run in English. ObjectiveThe Master Programme aims at educating a select number of highly qualified graduates from all over the globe preferably with a first degree in law, economics or political science on the highest academic level on issues of European integration. The students are provided with the knowledge and the skills necessary to pursue high level careers in international organisations, national ministries, enterprises, law firms or other professional activities. CurriculumThe Master Programme begins on 1 October and ends on 31 July the following year (taking ten months in total). After passing the relevant modules as well as handing in a master thesis marked with at least a grade of 4.0 (sufficient), the University of Hamburg awards the degree “Master of European Studies (M.E.S.)”; if a student has opted for the specialisation field “Law of the EU” or, upon request, in case a student has followed any other specialisation fields but has handed in a master thesis that fulfils criteria of a thesis in law the academic title “Master of Laws/European Legal Studies (LL.M. European Legal Studies)” will be awarded. At the start of the Master Programme the students are instructed in the “basic modules”. These modules are devoted to the legal, economic and political aspects of European integra-tion. The participation in the introductory programme, as well as in this set of modules, is compulsory for all students. The “specialisation phase” offers the students the opportunity to study one of the following fields of research in greater depth: The Master Programme consists of eleven modules in total, no matter which specialisation fields has been chosen by the student. Six modules are to be taken during winter term. Be-tween winter and summer term, in February and March, the practical module is placed. Stu-dents have to intern at institutions of the EU, representations of the Foreign Office in foreign countries, national ministries, governmental agencies, law firms, international organisations and the like. Owing to its ample national and international relations, the Europa-Kolleg Ham-burg is in a position to offer helpful assistance to students looking for a proper place for them to do an internship at. During the summer term four modules are to be passed. The master thesis is to be prepared within a period of two months during the summer term as well. Each module is to be successfully passed. The form the examinations take may vary de-pending on what the lectures deems most befitting their lecture (oral examinations, written examinations both in class and at home, papers analysing subjects or cases, presentations in class etc.). For successful completion of the modules a grade of at least 4.0 (sufficient) is needed to be achieved, for this an appropriate amount of credit points (CPs) according to the ECTS is awarded per module. A total of 60 CPs according to the ECTS can be earned. They are allocated to the different elements of the Master Programme as follows: 1) 15 CPs for successful completion of the basic modules, Additional eventsVarious symposia, workshops and lectures by guest lecturers are organised on a regular basis by the Institute for European Integration at the Europa-Kolleg. The master students have the opportunity to attend or to participate in these various events, besides the standard lectures of the curriculum of the Master Programme. Several excursions aimed to complement the content of the Master Programme are organ-ised by the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg. During summer term the participants travel to Luxem-bourg and Brussels to visit the institution of the European Union (European Court of Justice, European Commission, Council and European Parliament). In Brussels, visits to the Joint Representation of the States of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein (Hanse-Office) are also part of the programme. In Hamburg several excursion to local institutions like the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce are also organised. As regards alumni activities of graduates of the Master Programme and its predecessors, the Europa-Kolleg maintains an extensive Alumni Programme. Regular alumni meetings are organised, taking place in the weeks after Pentecost, at various locations (Hamburg, Prague, Budapest, Timisoara, Zagreb, Warsaw, Vilnius and Sofia). The meeting mostly lasts for three to four days; combined with a symposium, broad information and a visiting programme are arranged as well as ample opportunity to catch up with dear friends and to make new ac-quaintances.
